If, as you drag an item, you see a little white box with a plus sign (+) attached to your mouse pointer, you're about to copy the attached item. But if you see nothing attached to the pointer, you're about to move the item. If you see a shortcut arrow attached to the mouse pointer you're about to create--you guessed it--a shortcut.
