Takes forever to check for updates, when downloading it stalls at 0% downloaded

Windows 7 - Even after installing Convenience update... What a pain. Spent about 3 hours experimenting...
This seems to have worked:

"Get updates for other Microsoft products" in Windows 7 - takes you to a website telling you to use Windows Update...
Go into IE Compatibility View Settings and add microsoft.com

It looks like MS is intentionally getting in the way of getting updates on a clean W7 install.
Clean install refused to update (stuck at "Searching for available updates" for an entire day) until manually installed the Update for Windows Update Client KB3112343 <Download Link>

Sometimes, uninstall Microsoft Update (go back to Windows Update) fixes issues, then it can be reinstalled.
  1. Go to the Microsoft Update site
  2. In the Left SideBar, click Change Settings
  3. Scroll to the bottom and click the checkbox for Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only
  4. Click the [Apply Changes Now] button
