STEPS 1 - 3 CAN BE SKIPPED IF you either 1) have the driver disk for the printer to be installed or 2) know windows has the printer driver built-in. Otherwise, steps 1-3 create the network shared printer available to current user only AND download the driver from the computer that has the printer shared. The assumption as well is that the printer is already shared from the computer that has the printer obviously.
  1. Click on Start ... Run and type \\server and click ok, where \\server is the name of the computer that has the printer shared
  2. Double click on the printer you want to install and then click YES to install the printer when prompted (i.e. HP2100 for HP Laserjet 2100)
  3. After the printer is installed as a network shared printer, open the printers control panel and delete the printer that says HP Laserjet 2100 on server in this example
  4. Open the printer control panel if not already open and click on Add Printer and select Local Printer attached to this computer and uncheck Automatically detect and install and click Next
  5. Select create a new port and select Local Port from the drop down list and then click Next
  6. Manually enter the port shared name as \\server\hp2100 (see above) and click OK, where you substitute \\server as the actual computer that has the printer and \hp2100 for the actual share name used (recommend never placing spaces in the shared printer name when creating the share, otherwise you need to make sure you include the spaces here)
  7. After you create the local port that points to the network shared printer, you will be prompted for the printer driver. If you have the printer driver or it is built into windows you may search for it. If you downloaded the driver from the computer sharing the printer, just select HP Laserjet 4 (basic printer driver) for now and we will change later (see step 9)
  8. When prompted, you may change the name of your printer. Note: If you selected the basic HP Laserjet 4 option, you will definitely want to change the name to the correct printer model, etc. for your own reference. Follow the remaining prompts until the printer is created.
  9. If you had the correct printer driver, you are finished. If you tricked the system with the default HP Laserjet 4 driver in step 7, you will need to complete step 9. Open the properties on the printer you just created, go to the Advanced tab and then change the driver to the correct driver you downloaded in step 2 above. Click OK to save the printer information. Open the printer properties back up once and make sure your defaults are set correct (you must have clicked OK to save the printer before you go back in otherwise the new device driver settings won't have been changed yet.
